School of Environmental Engineering and the International Joint Lab Hold the Fifth Academic Lecture to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of HAUT

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Henan University of Technology (HAUT), build a high-level academic exchange platform, and support the high-quality development of the School of Environmental Engineering during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, the School of Environmental Engineering and the Henan International Joint Laboratory of Environmental Pollution, Remediation and Grain Quality Security held the fifth academic lecture of the "Seventy Years of HAUT, Academic Leadership" 70th anniversary series on September 30 in Conference Room 9237, Weixin Hall. The speaker was Dr. Farzana Kastury from Flinders University in Australia. At the lecture, Dr. Kastury gave academic presentations about her research work, exchanged views with faculty and students of the School of Environmental Engineering, and discussed future collaboration between both sides.

The academic lectures were held in two sessions, morning and afternoon. The morning presentation was titled "Metabolomics and Lipidomics Reveal the Effects of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) on the Molecular-Level Health of Earthworms during PFAS Immobilization." Dean Wan Dongjin, Vice Deans Chen Hanyu and Zhang Liangbo, and faculties and students of the School of Environmental Engineering attended the lecture, which was chaired by Professor Li Liping. Dean Wan Dongjin first delivered a welcome speech, extending a warm welcome to Dr. Kastury for her visit. She then introduced the School's teaching, research, and social service activities, and expressed the hope for various forms of future exchange and collaboration between the two sides. Afterwards, Dean Wan Dongjin presented Dr. Kastury with a letter of appointment as a master's supervisor. In her presentation, Dr. Kastury introduced the immobilization of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soil by granular activated carbon and its effects on the metabolomic and lipidomic traits of earthworms, and answered questions and comments of the audience.

The afternoon presentation was titled "Remediation of Lead-Contaminated Soil by Plumbojarosite: Bioaccessibility, Relative Bioavailability, and Speciation Analysis." The presentation introduced the mechanisms and methods for converting Pb in contaminated soil into plumbojarosite to reduce its toxicity, with particular emphasis on the effects of parameters such as shaking time, pH, and the dosage of key reagents, as well as the verification of stabilization efficacy using simulated extraction, mouse trials, and synchrotron radiation techniques. After Dr. Kastury's presentation, Professor Li Liping introduced the research interests and current research work of the main members of the Ecology and Environmental Remediation Team. Following the presentations, the team held detailed discussions with Dr. Kastury on future scientific research collaboration, and both parties agreed to strengthen exchanges in subsequent research work and collaborate on research directions of mutual interest.

The lecture in progress

This event broadened the research horizons of the faculty and students of the School of Environmental Engineering, enhanced exchange and understanding with Dr. Kastury, and laid a solid foundation for future collaboration. In the future, the School and the Joint Lab will continue to hold high-level academic exchange activities to strengthen its teaching and research capacity and social service, while providing strong support for discipline development.
